Motorola ATRIX 2 review

Motorola ATRIX 2 review

. When BGR Editor-in-chief Jonathan Geller first reviewed the original Motorola ATRIX 4G in February, he called it “one of the best smartphones to ever be available from AT&T.” Now I have that phone's successor, the Motorola ATRIX 2. It offers a few improvements over the original, including support for faster data speeds, a slightly larger display and a beefier camera.

China has their own supercomputer now

China has their own supercomputer now

China is not only the second largest economy in the world at the moment, trailing right behind the US at the moment, but the country also recently surprised high-performance US computing specialists as well by announcing the existence of the Sunway BlueLight MPP – a new supercomputer that was installed in September at the National Supercomputer Center in Jinan, located in eastern China. The Sunway system is capable of performing up to 1,000 trillion calculations each second, where a petaflop will more or less place it among the 20 fastest computers in the world.

Pantech Vega LTE Shows Off Touchless Gesture Controls – Apple's Legal Team Lies In Wait

Touch screens. That’s soooooo 2007. Say hello to the Kinect-ish gesture controlled Pantech Vega LTE for Korea. The device was announced back on the 6th with some pretty hefty specs and even without the knowledge of touchless gesture controls, the Vega LTE already had me drooling. The video below shows a Korean woman covered in dough and rather than get her phone all gooey, she uses a simple swipe gesture over the phone to answer the call.

The technology involved comes from the Israeli company eyeSight Mobile Technologies and will be integrated into the Vega LTE when it launches in South Korea this November.

Barnes & Noble hosting Nook tablet event on November 7th

. Barnes & Noble sent out invitations on Monday to a press conference that will be held on November 3rd in New York City. The event will focus on the company's Nook eReader devices, although it is unclear what will be announced. We suspect Barnes & Noble will unveil the Nook Color 2, an Android tablet that reportedly offers a 7-inch display. The Nook Color 2 will likely go head-to-head with the Amazon Kindle Fire this holiday season and it may be in Barnes & Noble's best interest to drop the price of its Android-powered eReader from $249 to match the Fire's $199 price point.

Facebook to build data centre near the Arctic Circle

The city is located near the Arctic Circle and will be home to Facebook's first European data centre. Lulea's sub-arctic climate will enable the company to take advantage of natural cooling resources with a climate that has short, mild summers and long, cold winters. The data centre will have a floor space of more than 900,000 square feet, which exceeds the size of 15 football fields. According to the town of Lulea, the facility will be built in three phases and eventually consist of three separate server rooms that are designed to handle a substantial portion of Facebook's data traffic.

Mozilla builds a special Bing'ed Firefox for Microsoft

This new Firefox features Bing as its default search engine instead of Google. According to Mozilla, the browser is an extension of the “partnership” the company announced with Microsoft in 2010. For Mozilla, the “Firefox with Bing” browser is certainly a good idea, as it is an opportunity to diversify its revenue and become at least a bit more independent of Google's search revenues. However, from Microsoft's perspective, this is a remarkable move because it is featuring the Firefox download from its own website.

HTC's upcoming flagship device - the Rezound - has leaked a couple of times before but this is the first 'official leak'. Ads just went up in Verizon stores showing off the yet to be announced HTC Rezound along with other 4G LTE devices on Verizon's network. Also, for the first time, we're seeing the phone with a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre earphones in tow. So all the red highlights on the phone were't just because it is a Verizon branded device.

Other details about the phone remain scanty. We know it will have a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 resolution S-LCD and it will be running on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Apple Acquires Mapping Company, iMap Probably Not Far Away

Apple Acquires Mapping Company, iMap Probably Not Far Away

News is out that Apple was the company who had acquired C3 Technologies last August (and shut it down). C3 is a mapping company known for its capacity to build maps that include 3D buildings,  textures and all (like Nokia does). Unlike many mapping companies that rely on a combination of satellite photos and GPS information, C3 could build maps and textured building models with planes (see video in the full post). This is a technique that allows for multiple (relatively shallow) angles, which is necessary to create textures for every sides of buildings, and that is simply impossible with high altitude satellites.

In case you liked the Windows Phone 7.5 running duo of Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash from last week's live shots, we have some good news for you. AT&T announced the upcoming availability and pricing of the two smartphones on its Facebook page today. As you can see above, the two devices will hit the shelves on November 6. The better equipped Focus S will set you back $199.99, while the entry-level Focus Flash will cost $49.99. Both prices will require a two-year commitment with AT&T.

While the price of the Focus S is hardly a surprise, the Samsung Focus Flash looks like a serious bargain for the fifty bucks you will spend on it.

Ford Lane Keeping System detects drowsy drivers

Ford Lane Keeping System detects drowsy drivers

If you've ever gotten sleepy behind the wheel, you would know how dangerous it can be. Well, the folks over at Ford have come up with a solution (even though the best solution is to just don't drive when you're sleepy) that aims to prevent sleepy drivers from getting into accidents. Called the Lane Keeping System, it continually monitors the vehicle's lane position and will notify a driver if it detects inattentiveness with a coffee cup warning light on the dashboard. In addition to the warning light, the system produces a warning chime and vibrates the steering wheel in case the driver doesn't notice it.

Acer W4 Allegro gets announced in France, runs Windows Phone, will be out in November for €299

A few weeks ago, Acer apparently announced its first Windows Phone, the Allegro. ‘Apparently' because that announcement only contained the pricing information. Sure, that's nice to have, but on its own it's pretty useless. We have assumed that the Allegro was the Acer W4 that was leaked a couple of times earlier this year, and that turned out to be true.
Acer has officially unveiled the Allegro in France today, and this time it's a proper announcement with all the necessary details.
