Toyota sells six of 10 of hybrids in California

Toyota sells six of 10 of hybrids in California

In an apparent shot back at Ford's increasing market share of electrified vehicles and claim that it accepts more Prius trade-ins for its own hybrids than any other car, Toyota has flexed a muscle and played the numbers game to put the Blue Oval in its place. Leaning on its hybrid market dominance in California, the Japanese automaker stated that six out of 10 hybrids sold in the Golden State are Toyota models. And it keeps coming: Year-to-date through May 2013, Toyota sold five times more hybrids than Ford. One of every two hybrids in California is a Prius model.

XKeyscore Is NSA's "Widest Reaching" Program For Collecting Data Online

By now you might have heard of NSA's data collection programs. The leaks started over a month ago when a former CIA technical analyst, Edward Snowden, leaked documents pertaining to NSA's PRISM program. We then saw documents related to NSA's Boundless Informant tool. Snowden has now leaked a cache of documents about yet another program of the National Security Agency, a program that allows it to collect “nearly everything” an individual does on the internet.

Next Kia Sedona minivan spied

After skipping the 2013 model year and returning for 2014, the Kia Sedona is getting a full redesign for 2015, which we see for the first time in these new spy shots. The new Sedona isn't going to look as much like the 2011 KV7 Concept as we had hoped, but we definitely see some key styling cues from the Kia concept minivan. Even though it's covered in heavy camouflage, we can see that some of the KV7's cues on the 2015 Sedona include the vertical front marker lights, the horizontal taillights and the pinched beltline starting at the C-pillar.

Philips compact fluorescent bulbs with built-in photocell automatically turn on your porch lights

I recently reviewed the Belkin WeMo Switch and said it was one of the steps I was taking to automate my home and increase its security.  The Switches work great to control lamps plugged into outlets inside my house, but my porch lights don't plug in to an outlet.  I had first thought that I might use the new WeMo light switches with my porch lights, but I think my house wiring is too old to use with them.  I like to have my lights automatically turn on and off with the sun, and I used to use a screw-in base with a photocell when I had different fixtures and used incandescent bulbs.

Nintendo Only Sold 160,000 Wii U Consoles Last Quarter

Nintendo's Wii U is clearly not doing as well as the company had hoped, and recent figures on the console's sales have not changed that. According to a recent report by Nintendo, it was revealed that the company made an operating loss of around $50 million on net sales of $832 million in the first quarter of its financial year. The report went on to reveal the number of Wii U consoles that were sold worldwide between the months of April to June, with the console selling around 160,000 units. While this number seems pretty big to the average observer, it should be noted that this is actually a 51.3% decrease from last quarter.

BlackBerry Executive Does Not Think The Company Is In Trouble

Over the past few days we've seen reports where it suggested that Microsoft's Windows Phone platform was doing pretty well, with a recent report from Kantar suggesting an 8.1% market share in the UK, putting them ahead of BlackBerry. This "success" was the replicated in the US where Windows Phone, despite falling a bit in market share, was still ahead of BlackBerry, and we're sure at this point some are wondering if there's anything BlackBerry can do to pull themselves up. There is also the question of, is BlackBerry in trouble because of this.

The 2001 Aztek you see here has the distinction of being the very first Aztek ever sold with VIN 001, and it's currently up for auction on eBay. This isn't the first time this particular Aztek has seen an auction block, though. It was one of many GM-owned vehicles at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, and it ended up selling for $15,950.

Brick Joystick - Another gadget that claims to improve your mobile gaming experience

Last week I posted a review of the Invisible Gamepad Kickstarter project, which are easy to use stick-on gamepads for smartphones and tablets. I found that the Invisible Gamepad worked better than other stick-on joysticks that I've tried in the past (see related reviews at the bottom of this post), but it still lacked a traditional joystick feel that can only be achieved with a physical controller. Now I've found another potential joystick alternative to try. It's the Brick Joystick from Grayhaus. The Brick Joystick comes in two flavors.

The update has a version number of v10.1.0.4537 and itÂ's a bug-and-fixes update that only adds a handful of truly new features. Back in May, we saw BlackBerry announce the official availability of the BlackBerry 10.1 update to the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone (the Q10 already had it at launch). Now, the company has a second go at this one, refining the user experience and adding some minor new features.

Does Pantech's "Fablet" trademark mean they're trying to enter the big phone arena?

Trademarks can be a funny business. Sometimes they're so vague that you can't do much but express a big “WTF” in your mind, and other times they have a way of letting you know exactly how a company is thinking. Such is the case with Pantech, who has trademarked the “Fablet” character mark. This is quite interesting, as it's a direct homophone of the “phablet” word that has been tossed around as of late.

Earlier we had reported that thanks to a recently spotted image in on Vietnamese website Tinhte, a battery cover that was reminiscent of the Porsche P'9881 was sighted. A team of researchers at the National Taiwan University have created a Wi-Fi enabled sensor that is embedded in the mouth. The sensor is capable of collecting data on daily habits such as eating and smoking, the current prototype reportedly has a 94 percent accuracy in collecting such data. The sensor is capable of differentiating between coughing, speaking, eating, smoking, drinking and breathing. This collected data can then be sent to a doctor.
For now, the sensor needs an external power source, but researchers are working on fitting an internal power solution.

UpWrite desks are height adjustable and can even take your messages

Back in the olden days when CRTs had glass screens, I used to use a dry-erase marker to leave myself a note right on the screen for important things I needed to do first thing after getting to work.  I don't dare write on my screens with anything now, so I just have to put a sticky note on the bezel and hope it doesn't fall off during the night.  If I had an UpWrite desk, I could write the note right on the 60″ X 30″ desk top.  In addition to having a white work surface that works with both wet- and dry-erase markers, the UpWrite has an electric lift for easy height adjustment.

WaterBean Filter Is An Interesting Alternative To Bottled Water

It is estimated that consumers in the U.S. spend as much as $15 billion each year on purchase of bottled water. Then there's the longstanding debate about tap water vs bottled water, it is believed that as much as 40 percent of bottled water is actually tap water. So why do consumers spend so much money on it. For some, its the peace of mind that the water is free of all impurities. WaterBean is a new alternative to bottled water. Its a portable water purifying filter that is capable of fitting in to any water bottle, so it turns ordinary tap water in to crisp and clean water.
