Google Acquires More Patents from IBM

Google Acquires More Patents from IBM

As the final days of 2011 came and went Google managed to add even more to their patent portfolio with the acquisition of 217 patents previously owned by IBM. The move follows Google's purchase of over 2,000 patents from IBM earlier in the year as well as the absorption of Motorola's catalog of intellectual property after buying out the mobile manufacturer. 188 of the newly acquired patents are current while 29 are pending final application approval and cover everything from servers and data caching to how a mobile phone displays a webpage and deploys near-field technologies. The sale shouldn't hurt IBM's already strong patent portfolio.

id America introduces Spark in-ear headphones

id America introduces Spark in-ear headphones

Creativity is not quite dead yet, as id America intends to prove with their Spark in-ear headphones. These colorful aluminum earphones were specially designed with the automotive spark plug proving itself to be the main source of inspiration. Makes perfect sense, since the folks at id America seem to be petrolheads considering the hugely popular Gasket iPhone 4 case. What about the Spark, and just how does it stand out from the other headphones in the market apart from its looks.

Sony Ericsson readies “something big” for next week. Xperia Arc HD and Xperia Ion maybe?

It's been quite a while since Sony Ericsson announced an Xperia smartphone (the Xperia Arc S and Xperia Neo V don't count here, since they're just slightly upgraded older models). But it looks like the company is now finally ready to unveil something really new. SE has announced (via Google+ and Facebook) that it's going to present "something big" next week - most likely during CES 2012 (January 10 - 13).

Siri clone removed from Android Market

Siri clone removed from Android Market

Google has banned the Siri knockoff app that was making its rounds on the Android Market, which is good for them considering the app called “Siri for Android” is nowhere near the proficiency of the actual Siri's performance on the iPhone 4S. In fact, Google's banhammer has also fallen upon the developer, which means you won't hear from the developer on the Android Market any more from now onwards.

Windows 8 tablets from Acer and Lenovo arriving in the second half of 2012?

Windows 8 doesn't have an official release date, but it looks like we'll be seeing it in the second half of this year - according to the folks over at DigiTimes. They've reported that Acer and Lenovo are reportedly working on Windows 8 tablets that will be released in Q3 2012. The tablets will be running on Intel's upcoming Clover Trail processor as opposed to the new Medfield processors that will be released in the first half of the year. A new version of the Windows operating system, and new processors to go along with it - 2012 is sure shaping up to be an interesting year.

Rumor: Apple iBooks Event in New York This Month

Rumor: Apple iBooks Event in New York This Month

Rumors point to an iBooks announcement at an Apple event later this month. Apple is planning a “media event” in New York Later this month, according to All Things D. The event will likely be presented by Apple's senior vice president of Internet software and services (and Larry Page look-a-like), Eddy Cue.
Will this be the hotly-rumored AppleTV (the actual TV with a screen)? Will it be the iPad 3? No. First, it's in New York, which is where Apple launched the iPad-only newspaper The Daily almost a year ago–Apple launches hardware in San Francisco. Second, Eddy Cue isn't in charge of hardware.
