Flickr brings in Nokia map data for precise geotagged photos, Instagram shots just got eerily accurate

Open Street Map has been helping Flickr display geotagged shots for some time. That crowdsourced map data has led to more than a few photos being located in a gray blob, however, which is why Yahoo just struck a deal to put Nokia maps into as many nooks and crevices of the world as possible. The addition will make sure that Instagram photo tour of Africa is often accurate down to the street corner, not to mention give a slightly Finland-tinged look to the maps themselves. Open Street Map isn't going away, but it's now being used only for those areas where regular coverage is spotty or non-existent.

New system lets you type with your brain using MRIs

This isn't mind reading, per say. Instead Bettina Sorger, Joel Reithler, Brigitte Dahmen and Rainer Goebel at Universiteit Maastricht have figured out a way to monitor the flow of blood in the brain and associate the images captured using an MRI with the letters of the alphabet. The whole system takes about an hour to learn and configure for each individual. Trials focused on healthy individuals, but clearly its the paralyzed and people suffering from diseases like ALS that have the most to gain. Sorger hopes to enable "locked-in" patients to finally be able to communicate with the outside world by thinking out letter at a time.

Virgin Mobile is offering the iPhone to its prepaid customers as of today. The Sprint-owned subsidiary is using the event to kickstart a new retail strategy that will see the company open branded retail stores in Chicago - with a nationwide rollout dependent upon its success. Since all carriers have to make a minimum commitment to Apple in order to receive the handset, it's interesting to see that Virgin's allocation forms part of Sprint's $15.5 billion gamble on the handset that's still yet to pay off.

FCC smacks Comcast for hiding standalone broadband option

. Cable companies just love to sell bundled services for one important reason - it makes them buckets of money - but Comcast last year made an agreement with the Federal Communications Commission that it would actively promote an affordable standalone broadband option to customers as one condition of being allowed to purchase NBC Universal. Per GigaOm, it seems that Comcast didn't live up to its end of the bargain because the FCC has slapped the company with an $800,000 fine for allegedly making it difficult for consumers to find its cheap standalone broadband plan.

Qualcomm is looking to avoid some of the weighty implications of courtroom battles with an air gap strategy that will restructure its R&D division into a new, wholly owned subsidiary known as Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI). While the parent company will retain the company's existing patent portfolio, QTI will be responsible for product development and the existing semiconductor business. Interestingly enough, it's also said that the subsidiary will ramp up its use of open source software, and it'll strive to avoid the patents of parent company, Qualcomm.

There's an LG VS950 that's been approved by the FCC yesterday, and its diagram looks exactly like the one of the Optimus Vu. Moreover, the VS950 features Verizon-friendly LTE, and its model number clearly suggests it's headed to the largest US carrier.
Also, the Bluetooth SIG says the device is made for North America. So this must be Verizon's own Optimus Vu.

Google's Project Glass gets some more details

Google's Project Glass has been one of the most anticipated and hyped projects to come out of Google in quite some time. After a rather epic demo the company finally gave us a slightly deeper look at the wearable computer of our (supposed) future. Inside is the usual set of components you'd expect inside any mobile phone. There's a "powerful" CPU and "lots" of RAM (though, there was no mention of specifics) alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless radios for pulling in data. There's a mic for voice commands, a speaker and a camera, which can also be controlled by the touchpad that lines the side of the wearable device.

So I've been looking at shorter cables, dual cables and multi-tip cables like the Visible Green Data/Charge Cable for Apple and USB Visible Light Multi-Charge Short Cable that Brando recently sent me.

While portable devices like iPhones are quite handy enough to bring along anywhere, charging them is usually another matter. Users have to bring along those bulky chargers with their cables and such just to make sure that they are handy when the devices need charging. It would therefore be a welcome if one has the JuiceBuddy handy. The JuiceBuddy may be considered as the world's smallest iPhone charger by virtue of its size.
