Toshiba Supermarket Scanner Detects Products by Shape

Toshiba Supermarket Scanner Detects Products by Shape

One of many reasons why Japan is better than all of us: Toshiba has developed a supermarket scanner that does not need barcodes to identify produce but instead it detects individual species of fruit and vegetables simply from its shapes. The device uses a camera with optical pattern recognition technology that filters out “visual noise” before identifying the produce based on its shape, surface pattern, and coloration. It also does the usual labels-and-coupons scanning, but that's no fun.
So far, the scanner has a limited database so it may not be able to tell cilantro and flat parsley apart.
